I lied. I did not tell any of my Family members that I was back to the Philippines. I immediately rushed off to catch my connecting flight from Kuala Lumpur to Butuan City leaving my suitcase at the airport to be fetched by my friend. Thank God for a friend like her. She took good care of my stuff. The next thing I know, I was at Jollibee with the boyfriend waiting for our boarding time. God I missed CHICKEN JOY – Emphasis on the CHICKEN JOY. The moment we arrived in Butuan City, we instantaneously skipped the jeepneys that go forth the Bus terminal instead we chose to ride on a van for PHP200.00 to save time and to make ourselves comfortable to the entire road trip.

We only have 3 days to explore Surigao Del Sur and on our 2nd day, we traversed to Enchanted River from Bislig through Habal – Habal for 2 hours. It was literally a butt numbing journey. I thought about giving up during the first 45-minute ride under the scorching hot without scarf, hat or anything to cover myself from the agony. It was a punishment. I wasn’t prepared. It was the 2nd time in my entire life that I rode a motorcycle. First was when I was in High School that almost scared me to a near death experience. Since then, I hated motorcycles! So when I went to Surigao, I thought maybe I should give motorcycles a second chance.

The road to Hinatuan’s Enchanted River is not yet cemented. There were moments when I thought we were almost there when in fact we weren’t close to near at all. it was just bumpy and dusty and I was just glad I am not an asthmatic patient. Every time we reached a wooden bridge, our driver instructed us to just hop out the habal habal and just walk. According to him there were a couple of accidents on the bridges. It was good that he was taking precautions. The trip was long and patience is really not my strong suit.
We were almost near when the habal-habal lose its power uphill. We were terrified! We rolled off downhill. That was when I realized there was one thing that was hotter than the blazing sun – my leg on the exhaust of the motorcycle I could barely move. I screamed and the boyfriend pulled me over. He on the other hand had no scratched at all. I got two burns on my right leg, a small one near the knee and large one on the ankle. It was nauseating! I felt sad when I saw our driver; he got burns on the right side of his leg too and it was bigger than mine.

Enchanted River Hinatuan

Picnic Area

Shhhhhhhhhh!!

It did not stop us from riding the motorcycle again. Of course we didn’t have a choice but to see the stunning Enchanted River. I told our driver that Enchanted River must be worth it. When we arrived, the boyfriend was really amazed with the blue river; I on the other hand couldn’t praise the river at all. It was beautiful but the pain I felt on my right leg was more powerful. The photos that I saw online were exactly the same view. It was indeed aquamarine in color.

The boyfriend walked through the nearby canteen to order food while I was sitting there dehydrated and God knows what sort of severe pain I was suffering. He requested to serve the food by 12. He was really eager to jump into the crystal clear waters of the river. He dived in first while I watched our belongings – well not really guarded them as I fell asleep on the wooden chair with my backpack as my pillow and the beach towel which served as my bed sheet. I barely fit in but I slept for hours. The boyfriend woke me up to have lunch. I felt sleepy like as if I can clutch the covers of a queen size bed. The spicy buttered crab, grilled tuna, marinated grilled pork belly, rice, mineral water and 1.5 liter coke greeted me. I tried to avoid too much seafood that time because prior to enchanted river I had diarrhea which I got from eating kinilaw na seashells – a raw seashells mixed with vinegar, sliced cucumber and whatnot in one of our layovers somewhere in Tandag. I attacked the grilled pork belly since I hardly eat pork and it’s rare in a Muslim country like Malaysia.

The view

Crystal clear blue waters of ER

Exactly twelve noon, we heard the bell rings and there was like a somewhat chants from the radio or something. It was when they feed the fishes and people were requested to clear the river and watch for a while. The fishes that came out from nowhere were really huge. I noticed even the staff asked the people to go up there were still people who can’t follow simple instructions and still remained in the water. The whole thing did not get me excited because I felt weak. After the fish feeding, I swam in the waters of the river. It was just perfectly cold after for what seemed like a heatstroke experience. I forget that I have burns and enjoy that moment. After all it was really what I wanted in the first place. The water is brackish. It was the only blue river that I saw in my whole life and I was amazed with the mixture of the salt and fresh water. There were times that I gulp some waters from swimming and it was like a few hours of free drinking spree. Despite the pricking ache brought by my burns, I still soaked myself in the water.

View from nowhere. LOL

Sorry! wasn’t able to take photos of the food. so here goes the leftovers! haha

The burns were still excruciating and there were some blisters all over it. It was awful. There was this part of me that I wanted to go back to Enchanted River maybe next time when the road is cemented. Enchanted River is wonderful but it could have been amazing if I did not experience the accident. It was my first travel accident. I barely walk and the burns took a month to heal; I don’t think I could ever forget my trip to Enchanted River. As long the scars remain, nothing can ever make me forget my trip to Enchanted River. In fact I hear it every day at work. My Filipino Boss calls me “Enchanted River” perhaps to tease me of what happened to me in Enchanted River. Ever since he saw the disgusting burns he never stopped giving me that nickname. So is Enchanted River worth it? Yes it was. I even recommend it to my Malaysian colleagues who kept asking me about the place when they saw my photos in Facebook. I just hope that the Government will do something about the road. Will ever ride a motorcycle? Maybe! I’m not ready yet.

River is soooooo Blueeeee

When we left Enchanted River, we asked our driver to drop us off at the nearest waiting shed where buses en route to Butuan pass by. When we were at the waiting shed, I realized that the accident happened to me was a potential Karma for not telling my family I was back. The trip to enchanted River serves as a moral lesson to me. True enough Karma is digital.

I walked slowly through the coastline while the waves hit the rocks; the wind blows like forever and the water, oh yes the water, the emerald green color of the sea that blends perfectly to the bright blue sky I could stare at it without blinking. Love at first sight. I never thought to be this wonderful. In fact I don’t even know the name of the beach until I’ve landed to this powdery beach.

I met Bamboo Island.

Bamboo Island, Phi Phi

Hello Bamboo Island!!

From the name itself, the beach is surrounded by bamboos and that’s all I know about it since I did not pay attention to our dear tour guide. It was early in the morning, a great time to walk, to swim, snorkel, take photos and simply just sit back and relax. I spotted the part where I could swim when our tour guide interrupted “don’t go to that part since there are lots of Korean!”. My friend whispered to me, “Racist! (Inserting curse here)” We loathe our tour guide for some reasons I’ll share it next time on my Phi Phi Tour post. The area she was pointing to was exactly the spot I’ve been eyeing to swim. I disobeyed her. I don’t mind sharing the same swimming spot with Koreans but they already left! Since no one dared to go there as instructed by our guide, that part was mine.

Me at Bamboo Island

Swimming!

I explored the island while my friend was taking videos from the other side. I finally gave in to dip, the waters were tempting, warm and so clear I even saw a school of fish. I closed my eyes while I float. I felt the water so relaxing it drives me crazy. I don’t even care about getting sunburn. All I wanted to do that time was to float, float and float. The fishes were fearless I felt them on my skin. If only I have my own underwater camera.

Into the shore

The Beach

The sand is pure white sand and I love how it touches my soles, soft and creamy. The hermit crabs scamper along the shore. The bamboos that were lined up seem like jungle but looks lovely when the wind swayed them. The ray of the sun light shimmers to the water. The crowd is incomparable as that of Maya Bay or maybe because we were too early. To see Maya Bay is a dream come true but Bamboo Island is by far my most favorite beach in our entire island hopping in Phi Phi. My photos do not do justice. If only I could stay until the sunset, I would!

The Blue waters of Bamboo Island

Pardon me, I love being in the city but there is something about Bamboo Island that makes me yearn for more.

Bamboo Island – ’till we meet again.

When you’re going away, you should know that arranging appropriate travel insurance is an essential part of your holiday. Without it, you could be liable for huge medical bills if you have an accident or fall ill while you’re abroad – so it certainly pays to take out the right level of cover. First and foremost, you should make sure that the policy you choose is adequate for your needs and will cover you should the worst happen. But if you’re hoping to find cheap holiday insurance, there are a number of ways to help keep the costs down.

For starters, make sure you’re only paying for what you need. For instance, there’s no need to take out annual cover if you’re only going away once this year, and equally, don’t buy single trip cover if there’s a strong chance you’ll go abroad again within the next year or so, otherwise it will cost you much more in the long run.

Another way to find cheap holiday insurance is to use a comparison website. This can help you to get a good idea of the market and to weigh up the policies available across the majority of key travel insurance providers. It can also help you to compare the prices too, which is a helpful way of finding out which is the cheapest – and which offers the best value for money. Make sure you opt for reputable sites, and equally, only consider high quality insurance providers – after all, if you need to make a claim, you want to make sure you have the best chance of receiving the pay-out.

Find out more about travel insurance online through tour operators like Thomas Cook. Visit their insurance information page here for further details on their range of policies and to find out how to book: http://www.thomascook.com/holiday-extras/travel-insurance/.

Do you fancy trying a new sport during your upcoming summer holiday? If you’re heading for a beachclub, the availability of watersports will be inevitable and, depending on the resort you choose, the selection available could be exhaustive. If you have chosen a windsurfing holiday this year, you could take the pick from some breathtaking resorts in which to hone your windsurfing skills.

If you have never even tried windsurfing before, you’re in for a treat. While you may think that it requires substantial strength, it’s suitable for anyone with a will to learn something new. It’s all about balance and developing the right techniques to make sure you stay on the board and can navigate the waves successfully.

Before you head off on your first lesson, brush up on your knowledge of the equipment you’ll need to master if you’re to do well at the sport.

Surfboard – You’ll likely be shown how to stand on it for the first time on the shore or in the shallow waters. It may seem obvious, but it needs to be able to float when you’re standing on it. The board will have a fin underneath at the back which enables the board to steer.

Sail – This is the piece of equipment that moves the board. As a beginner, you shouldn’t be using a sail that is bigger than 4.5m2 – the sizes will be marked on the sails but your tutor should organise the perfect kit for you.

Boom – This is the part of the sail that you hold on to, so that you can control the sail and manoeuvre the board. It’s attached the mast that connects vertically with the sail. At the bottom of the mast, there’s a flexible joint called the mast base, which helps you to move the sail around.

Uphaul – This is a piece of rope that helps to pull the sail out of the water.

The windsurfing experts will show you how to set up the board and take your first steps on the water, giving you a great opportunity to master a new sport and be active this summer.

There could be hundreds of words to describe how picturesque Maya Bay in Koh Phi Phi is but in my case, I was speechless. Despite the long tail boats coming in and going out of the bay, the view never underwhelmed me perhaps because I was expecting the place to be crowded but I was glad it wasn’t that elbow to elbow scenario kind of a thing. The moment I saw the bay, that line of Leonardo Di Caprio from the movie The Beach “I still believe in paradise” pop into my head all of a sudden. Well, as cliché as this may sound but he was right after all and the only thing I thought about was me and the beach or possibly to be fair, Me, the beach and Leonardo. No pun intended.

Maya beach is the crème de la crème of our Phi Phi Island Tour. It was totally a tropical bliss thus making my heart strike the joy of a beach bummer in me and still couldn’t believe I was there in the island. I took a lot of photographs as that part of the tour was the only thing I’ve been eyeing for so long. I explored the island bare footed, I don’t need to run like Leo did in the film. I savored fresh air, the scent of fresh natural leaves, the calm waters of the bay, the innate sound of the nature minus the little noise of the crowd and everything there is.

The scorching heat of the sun did not bother me. Not at all! The truth is I love how the warmth of the sun touches my skin. I tried to avoid our tour guide as much as possible because she had a lot of negativity going on her brain, for instance; our group just started to enjoy snorkeling when she told everyone to get into the boat because we might hit by a speedboat. We were like rolling our eyes off like hello we just felt the water for just perhaps 10 or 15 minutes only. Another thing, we didn’t dock to see the monkey island because according to her, monkeys will attack us when in fact most of the boats docked and their guest were able to step on the Monkey Island’s soil. So we were just there staring from afar. Wishing we were those guest from other tour groups that were able to land. I’m not sure if she was just lazy, double-dealing, taking precautions or simply just scaring us.

Maya Bay, Phi phi Islands

Looks familiar?

Exploring Maya Bay

Around Maya Bay

I somewhat like the long tail boats parked in the shoreline. The boats look unique to me. It’s a sign that I’m in Thailand. Maya Bay with the speedboats view is a different story. I don’t like the sight of the beach with speedboats all over. Guess I just don’t like the idea that speedboats blocked the magnificent view of the bay. Regardless of how speedboats ruined the background, it did not stop me from playing in the turquoise water of the beach like a happy child splashing her newest kiddie pool her mommy bought from toys’r’us.

<img src="http://galaera.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/20130501-024434.jpg?w=750&h=562" alt="Love at first sight!
I wished I could stay forever but just the thought of our tour guide nagging me makes me sick so I cooperated by making sure I was right on time to get to the speedboat. When I reached my seat, my friend’s face was disgusted. He raged how he loathes our tour guide for not letting him to at least bathe because we were running out of time. He regretted that he joined my exploration throughout the island while taking snapshots. He wished he had just dipped in the water instead of returning his camera back to the boat. I enlightened him that at least he was able to run and screamed on the top of his lungs “I will not die today!” through the somewhat forest where Leonardo scampered in the film. He added that the tour guide gave him fresh water melon as if she’ll succeed by seeking solace with his revulsion. He even created a curse video about it and sent it to our friends in Malaysia. It was hilarious but one thing’s for sure I was contented. <del datetime="2013-04-30T18:51:32+00:00">Maya Bay</del> is a part of my wish lists to see before I die and with high spirits, I finally ticked it off my list.

To be honest, I love Maya Bay but the corals, the lime stones, the waters of Palawan knocked it off. I’m just happy I did not expect anything in this Island. I just went there to fulfill my once long dream. There could be some rubbish at some areas and it wasn’t like a dream I ever dreamed of being in Maya alone because of the crazy crowd but I never regret glancing Maya bay. Perhaps for some it may be disappointing but for me, Its still “The Beach” I once dreamed of!

Caption me.

Will I ever go back to this touristy island?
Definitely without second thoughts! I mean, is that even a question? I’m sure I’ll be in the mood to camp for a change.

If you fancy a sun-drenched break with a difference, Tunisia must surely be high on your must-visit list. This fabulous east-meets-west destination serves up plenty of eastern charm and North African culture with a glorious Mediterranean backdrop.

Tunisia holidays offer a sublime coastline which forms perfect beach break territory. Sparkling blue waters lap glittering golden sands, while rustling palm trees sway gently in the gentle sea breeze and rows of sunbeds line up under cloudless blue skies. This glorious destination might be famed for its culture and ancient history, but it has a vibrant coastal lifestyle and bubbly resorts that would rival any modern beach holiday destination.

So what can you expect from Tunisia holidays? A relaxing vibe for one, and a classic combination of sun, sea and sand. You’ll find bustling beach resorts like Hammamett, Skanes and Sousse that blend with quiet fishing villages and bustling modern cities. Visit Tunisia’s magnificent historical ruins, explore its spice-scented streets and maze-like markets, and enjoy day trips ranging from camel safaris to a visit to the underground Star Wars-esque homes of Matmata.

Whatever you fancy, whether it’s stretching out on golden sands, enjoying a leisurely round of golf or splashing out on local goods and handmade trinkets, Tunisia holidays serve up plenty of memorable experiences.

One of the best ways to visit Tunisia is through a tour operator like Thomas Cook. Not only will you find plenty of money-saving deals on offer and great value for money, it’s also a relaxing and convenient way to go abroad. Package holidays include all your essentials like return flights, nightly accommodation and resort transfers, along with the services of a locally based representative. It really takes the hassle out of going away, leaving you free to get on with the important things – like enjoying your time away.

Fancy a short break? Not sure about cruising but want to give it a try? Looking for something fun, different yet affordable? Then a mini cruise could be right up your street.

As the name suggests, mini cruises are like a condensed form of cruising. Rather than the standard 7 or 14-night package cruise holiday, they’re usually no more than a night or two and focus on just one main destination. Sometimes they might last a little longer and take in a couple of key ports before heading back for home shores. It’s short, it’s fun and, more often than not, they’re everything you would expect from a standard cruise with stacks of onboard entertainment, great food and first-rate service – they’re just a lot shorter than the norm. Some mini cruises, especially the budget variety, are more basic and offer a more functional style of cruising which is much cheaper, and therefore better suited to those looking for fun on a shoestring.

For skeptical first-timers or those who aren’t sure about cruising, mini cruises are a great introduction. Some of the most popular ports of call include mini cruises to Bruges, St Peter’s Port in Guernsey, and Le Havre in France. You can book mini cruises direct from the operator, or use a travel agent such as Thomas Cook to scour the market and make your choice from a wide range of cruise brands. When you search for mini cruises from Thomas Cook you can choose itineraries from a vast range of cruise operators including P&O Cruises, Cunard, Royal Caribbean International, Thomson and more – so you’ve always got the best choice.

Mini cruises are a great way to experience all the fun of cruising and a glimpse into the luxury lifestyle of this unique holiday, without committing to a lengthy break or forking out a small fortune. Why not give it a go?

Mommy I’m scared!, screamed Marco the only kid in our group when the powerful waves almost took over our boat on our way to Fortune Island, the Greek like abandoned Resort in Nasugbu Batangas. We were aware of the strong waves during rainy season but not sailing beneath the scorching hot summer time. The sea was calmed only within half an hour from the time we left the black sand beach of Brgy Bucana. Little did we know that the MV Princess of the Orient, suplicio lines and Moreta Shipping lines sank off Fortune Island. We were really terrified and thankful that we survived the waves. We safely docked on the seashore despite the strong current of the water. The Grecian Pillars on the top of the hill and the pebbles and white sand stretches along the island greeted us.

Hello Fortune Island!

The resort is still attractive despite of the abandonment. Chris the caretaker told us that the resort is long owned by former Batangas Governor Tony Leviste and currently has been taken care of a Korean. According to him, there was a museum dedicated to the San Diego Dutch war ship that sank off Fortune Island. Now there isn’t much left of the said Museum. He affirmed that one can marvel the sea through diving for only Php2500 with instructor already. Hence, you must have a diving license to do this. He stated that the former Governor created a replica of the San Diego Galleon which still stands magnificently on the island itself. Long before the island have been neglected, the resort was operational. It includes electricity and they used refined water, maintained toilets, helipad, swimming pool, cabanas, basketball court, the Grecian Pillars and statues which can be reached through stairs and pristine white sand without some rubbish as what we can see now.

While the rest of our friends were swimming, my buddy Par and I walked throughout the island. The bungalows were half destroyed, cottages remain deserted, windows shattered, drained swimming pool as its center piece, some part which has been reclaimed by nature and the only left is Chris the caretaker with his two dogs namely Fortune and Tin Tin. Fortune Island, once place to escape for leisure have been cast off. I could imagine this resort on its blooming days during the late 90’s. We walked closely to the San Diego Replica, the facsimile’s position in the heart of the island. It appeared to me as if it was the black pearl ship minus the lateen sail which Captain Sparrow and the white crabs dragged off on the shore of the Caribbean. Anyhow, it looks fantastic and a bit creepy if you peek intimately.

Rusts have taken over the toilet and whose floor is now covered in blanket of dead leaves. No more electricity and water. We stayed in a somewhat Pavilion where chairs, tables and hammocks were still available to utilize. There is a simple grill tool available there don’t expect it to be fancy as long as you have enough charcoal, lighter and meat, you’re BBQ is good to go. Unfortunately when we arrived in Nasugbu the wet market was closed and the only option that time is to buy Grilled Chicken at Andoks. We had lunch in the island and it was like we owned the resort. We were the only guest around and the best part was we shamelessly wore our two pieces despite the obvious fat bellies. No one’s watching except perhaps the Greek Gods if there are any?

It’s not easy to swim there even strong swimmers can be pull by the powerful flow of the water. It even hit me right on the shoreline and it hurts to slam on the coast since the sand has so many pebbles on it much worse if you will be punch by the waves on big rocks. One must submerge under each approaching tough wave but still need to be careful as there are certain areas which tons of big rocks underwater.

The Grecian Pillars which looks like Parthenon from afar appears to be dreamy. We climbed on the edge and it was windy up there. The Greek like columns looks fantastic regardless of the wrecked fraction. The statues along with the columns overlooking the sea were spectacularly a breathtaking view. I can tell the busted pillars and statues were victims of the forces of nature. It looks as if Zeus strikes its wrath through lightning bolt on each of the pillars nevertheless the ruins remains to be my favorite part of the Island.

Most people asked me how I can afford a travel lifestyle and most likely they will always say I have a lot of money. It’s just that I’m one of those people who were bitten by a travel bug and it’s incurable. Ever since I embrace the nomadic life, I find it hard to settle for one place. Traveling is my life and for most people who think I’m too lucky to travel often. I think it’s just a matter of priorities and choices. I travel by choice and not by chance. Every penny counts. I sacrifice so much for the sake of traveling.

Here are the things that I graduated after becoming a traveler:

Fear of the known and the unknown

I’ve always dreamed of being a hobo and change the course of my life for better living through passions. I experience being afraid to go out of my comfort zone, of getting lost to unfamiliar territory, of trying out something that scares me, of getting sick on the road, of traveling independently, of running out of money in the middle of nowhere and of getting myself into a wanderlust known to danger zones and the list could go on and on. These are the things that frightened me that only I overcome by traveling. And as cliché as this may sound but travel taught me that there is good in seeing things in a whole new different perspective and the world don’t orbit on me alone and that there is so much to see and explore.

I realize that overcoming fear is a skill and the only way I conquered it was to defeat the thing that scared me the most.

Life of a Starbucks Addict.

Gone are the days when my body was composed of 90% Macchiato and 10% croissants. I had severe coffee and tumbler obsessions back then that I rather had a Grande espresso topped with steamed milk at Starbucks than getting a full meal until I realized it just doesn’t only creates a hole in my pocket but putting my health in jeopardy.

I had to let go my addiction little by little. It wasn’t easy until I received a call from Rustan’s Coffee Corp offering me a part time job as a Barista. I became a partner (partner is what Starbucks call their barista) and not only that I have free coffee every shifts and free coffee bean bag of my choice every month, I also had the opportunity to make frappuccinos, pull a good espresso shot, giving coffee tasting sessions with customers and of course extra income to fund my travels.

When I left Starbucks, I had to get myself a French press coffee maker and customize whatever flavors I want for my everyday coffee.

Gadgets

Who doesn’t want fancy gadgets? As much as I would like to be a gadget freak and overindulge myself to the latest fashionable electronics on the planet I rather save the money for my next destination. My whole life I’ve been studying how electronic works and currently supporting gadget issues. I have an old laptop, it’s not a touchscreen, it gets overheated most of the time and the fan gets noisy intermittently and I am still using Windows XP. Sure, I’ll replace it, only when the motherboard fails. I used to save money for gadgets and when I have it I no longer want it. I ended up selling, giving or losing them. None of them lasts. It is only a matter of time where you can utilize it, a temporary bliss. Gadgets aren’t for a lifetime and I can’t just keep up with the electronics trend. For me, it’s just impractical. Perhaps this is my excuse because I can’t afford to spend my money on a Mac book for an instance. The only reason I will buy a new cell phone is if it will die or lost only. Let’s just say that gadgets aren’t in my priority list.

Metro Bars

This is a confession of an ex johnannae. I can’t live a Saturday night where I don’t wear my eyeliner and my Smokey eye shadows and bear on my party dress and knee high boots in a guest list party name it Encore, Republiq, Lax, Icon et al. We all know that drinks are not free especially if you’re on a GL. Couldn’t help but order some drinks on a soiree Friday night where I could in fact buy a glass of Mojito and laze on the beach on a hot afternoon sun. I never missed any Halloween Ball and if there will be an award for it, I can say I got a trophy and a sash for perfect attendance. I didn’t force myself to actually withdraw from clubbing it just happen. It’s just that there comes a time in your life when you had enough. I know there is no pension for this kind of retreat but I can say I am a proud retired partyphille.

Graveyard Job

I have made professional sacrifices for the sake of nourishing my itchy soles. I backpacked a couple of provinces in the Philippines. I just can’t stand working on night shifts anymore. It was like I was bitten by Damon Salvador and made me sired to him for 6 years. I am finally free from lurking in the shadow of darkness and I cannot be compelled anymore. Not in this lifetime. Sure, there is night differential and hazardous pay but nothing beats a healthy day shifts. It wasn’t easy to leave a career where you already established yourself and especially if that career is giving you enough money to acquire most of your needs. When I gave up my previous Job, I convinced myself that it was just my job not my entire life at stake. I know I can get a better job. In fact, while I was basking myself in the charismatic island of El Nido I got an offer to work in Malaysia. Quitting the night shift job was somehow a blessing in disguise.

Did I ever regret any of this? Not at all! Like what they say “Life is an adventure, I can’t wait to live it some more”.
