We travelled to Lake Bled, Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave from Ljubljana on a small group tour with Roundabout Travel. There’s nothing more astounding than combining three of the most famous attractions in Slovenia in one day! We only have limited time in Slovenia and the tour from Roundabout Travel sounds like a perfect day out from Ljubljana.
Lake Bled is the only island in Slovenia and is home to fairy tales and folklore. It’s a beautiful place to start our journey and discover its rich history. We first explored the Bled Castle and marveled at the spectacular views of the lake. I must admit that the Bled Castle has one of the most interesting viewpoints to see Lake Bled in a different perspective. We also get to sample the notorious local dessert called Bled Cream Cake and hot choco, a smooth remedy for the breezy autumn. The cake, by the way is utterly delicious and absolutely not to be missed!
We rode the traditional wooden boat to Pletna, took the 99 stone steps to the legendary Assumption of Mary Church and rang the infamous wishing bell 3 times! It was believed that ringing the bell would give you good fortune. I must confess it took me a few attempts of pulling the rope before the bell really rung. The idyllic backdrop of the island in the middle of the lake, the colors of the autumn, and the stunning castle atop the cliff in the alpine setting, Lake Bled is magical! I could imagine how surreal it could be in winter.
Our next stop was Predjama Castle. Postcard-perfect castle set in the middle of a towering cliff. I enjoyed the English audio-guided tour of the astonishing history of the castle. It’s such a great tool to uncover interesting stories of the castle from the past particularly on how people escape under siege.
This castle was certainly built strategically on a gigantic rock that serves as a natural shield from bad weather and nemeses. Seeing the chambers and listening to the audio guide, I could imagine how they live back then. Predjama Castle is the world’s largest cave castle. I was utterly astounded at how cool it was! I mean, how could they build such an impressive castle perched on a cliff edge? Mesmerizing! It outcast all of the castles I’ve been. Predjama castle is by far, the most unique and thought provoking of all!
Our last stop was an unexpected surprise. An incredible visit to Postojna Cave was a brilliant way to leave a lasting impression of the tour! We took the coolest electric train ride for the first part of the trail. The cave is so massive that only a train ride could whizz you past the rock formations of magnificent stalagmites and stalactites.
I was gobsmacked intensely in one of the huge hall of venetian glass chandeliers that looks like a ballroom from beauty and the beast! That part of the cave is just fabulous! The second part of the trail required us to walk up and down the slopes in the cave’s paradise zone with guides in different languages. To saunter amidst natural rock formations that are over centuries old is pretty overwhelming. My photos don’t do justice to the exquisiteness of the cave.
We get to see the mysterious “human fish” in a tank. This cave dragon creature can live in complete darkness and can live up to 100 years without consuming food for 10 years. It’s a rare opportunity to take a glimpse of this little creature. Our walking tour ended at the astonishing Concert Hall that is renowned for its exceptional acoustic sound. I could imagine how majestic it would be to end the tour witnessing an orchestra performance.
The last part was to take the train back to the main entrance. The train ride in and out of the cave was mind blowing! I haven’t visited a cave this grand!
