They say that there is no better way to level up than to learn new skills. Whether it could be advancing your career or just to pursue a hobby like in my case, a latte art enthusiast. Last year’s MCO awaken my mind to revive an old passion that was not really lost, but disregarded for years. Making coffee was one of the skills I am proud of in my early 20’s when I worked in an international coffee shop except that we don’t have Latte Art. So I start to learn Latte Art and I was pretty disappointed. I can’t even properly frothe milk! I lose patience and I don’t know which one to blame, the Coffee Machine or Myself. Making Latte is easy, but adding art to it is hard and it’s not an overnight success. I almost give up but when a friend send RGB Latte Art Instagram link, I thought I could use some expert’s help.
RGB Latte Art was established on 2016 aiming to train everyone who wants to learn the fine art that is Latte Art. More importantly, it encourages students that the class is open from all races and ages with no experience needed. I was stoked!
I meet my trainer Aaron along with the other two Coffee Aficionados. We were taught how to operate basic coffee machine, its accessories, grinding, tamping, dosing, pulling shots, frothing milk and yes, how to make basic heart latte art. He walks us through the process of pouring milk, positioning, landing, speed, strike-through. I like that the workshop is fun and interactive. Everyone got its turn and fair share of practicing the basic heart design. Hands-ons is the most exciting part. Even a heart is not easy; it requires a lot of practice, patience and a certain amount of determination.
Aaron also showed us the importance of what kind of milk needed for a perfect forth like using Full Fat Milk instead of Almonds or low fat milk. Moreover, that a Grinder that is of quality is also essential. Lots of tips and tricks that is fundamental for the learning process. We have some failed attempts, few successes and Aaron gave us his remarks on each results. I think that is the best part of it, the feedback whether the outcome is good or bad. He also pointed out that it took him years to perfect his craft and the only way to learn is by doing it.
That workshop is only 4 hours but I learned a lot. Whether you are Latte Art fanatic, a barista who wants to hone your coffee skills, new café owners, maybe someone who is planning to start your own coffee shop, learn like a pro, and perhaps you just happen to have an espresso machine at home and you want to impress your friends, – this workshop is for you!
Now that I built my latte art foundations, I can’t wait for the next advance workshop. Sure elegant and intricate designs like the swans and other inverted patterns will be my next target.
To one Latte Art Pattern at a time. ❤
