We all know that Dublin is awash with lively activity and entertainment throughout the year but between September and October, the city really comes into its own with the staging of the Dublin Festival season.
There are plenty of affordable hotels in Dublin so that, regardless of when you decide to join the party, you will be centrally placed to enjoy everything that’s going on. Running between the 1st September and the 31st October, the festival season is a great representation of Dublin’s party-loving atmosphere and has something in store for everyone.
Whether it’s arts that are your forte or if you’re at home with a pint of Guinness in your hand, there’s a festival that will please you. Here are some of the highlights:
• Mountains to Sea DLR Book Festival (3rd – 8th September) celebrates various aspects of literature, namely fiction, and includes plenty of readings and poetry excerpts for every bookworm to appreciate.
• Dublin Fashion Festival (5th – 8th September) is an absolute must for any follower of fashion and perfect if you want to do a little shopping as part of your visit to the capital, too. Guerrilla fashion shows can be enjoyed during the evening at various bars and restaurants in the city, while, in the daytime, you can appreciate street fashion shows and workshops.
• Oktoberfest (19th September – 6th October) arrives in Dublin giving people in the city to enjoy this authentic German festival on Irish turf. Head for Georges Dock to be part of the fun, where there’ll be traditional German markets and stalls as well as plenty of beer to devour.
• Dublin Theatre Festival (26th September – 13th October) has been a major event in the city since the late 50s. Check out The Hanging Gardens and Rough Magic, or the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of The Rape of Lucrece. Perhaps the awesome circus and burlesque show, Circa for lovers of alternative theatre?
• Bram Stoker Festival (25th – 27th October) provides a wonderfully gothic end to the festival season, celebrating the life, works and legacy of one of their most famous sons, Bram Stoker.
With plenty of events as part of the Dublin Festival schedule, it’s up to you when you decide to head for the city but book your accommodation now to avoid disappointment.
