New Zealand is becoming ever more popular as a holiday destination in its own right. Before, many people might’ve bolted on a trip to the islands after a stay in Australia, but it’s appealing to more and more individuals and families who are looking for an adventure in its own right. If this is what you’re after from your next getaway, I have a few suggestions about what you should do during your stay in New Zealand.
On the north island you’ll find Auckland, where many international flights land. This makes it a convenient base if you’ve had enough travelling after your long flight. Those who want to get in touch with nature might prefer to go to the south island to Christchurch, which is a good place to stay in between your excursions. Here is what you can expect from both options….
North Island: Stay in Auckland
Auckland welcomes many thousands of visitors each year who are looking for their first taste of life in New Zealand. There are plenty of attractions to enjoy so you don’t need to worry about finding activities to fill your days. Here are some of the tried and tested attractions:
Auckland Zoo – see some of the amazing native species without having to trek into the wilderness. From unique birds to sea life, you’ll certainly see something new. Of course, there are also animals from other countries such as Australia’s wallabies and emus, and other rare species from Australasia.
Sky Tower – look out to the horizon from the Sky Tower, 328 metres high. If you’re frightened of heights I wouldn’t recommend the SkyWalk or the SkyJump, but you might think that the nerves are worth it when you sit down in the 360 degree revolving restaurant.
Rain Forest Express – research the providers of rental cars in Auckland and hire a motor to get you to Titirangi where the train departs. It’s only 40 minutes away from the centre of the city, but feels a world away when you experience the strange sights and sounds of the rainforest.
South Island: Stay in Christchurch
Nature lovers and thrill seekers head to the south island to discover beautiful scenery and many exciting excursions. There is so much to do but make sure you have enough time to do these:
Whale watching – drive up to Kaikoura and book yourself on a boat trip. Whale watching excursions take place daily, giving you a chance to look out for vast sperm whales and pods of orca whales. Don’t forget your camera for this trip out!
See the mountains – from the comfort of a train carriage, you’ll be able to see the beautiful alpine surroundings of the Southern Alps. Get on board the TranzAlpine train and you’ll head up to the mountains on a series of viaducts; it’s simply stunning. If you go all the way to Greymouth on the train you’ll be able to discover the west coast for a night before travelling back the next day.
