The Oxford English Dictionary defines travelling as: “to make a journey, typically of some length.”

Yet, there is something far more to travelling than this for me.
What is the purpose of travelling? Why do we travel? Where is it we are looking to get to? Depending on who you talk to you may get very different answers to each of these questions. For some it’s a way of escaping the daily hum drum grind of the 9 to 5 working week. For others it’s a way of trying to “find themselves” or to become a better person in some way. For others it’s just a way of escaping from their commitments, responsibilities, and normal life.

But what if travelling was something, much more positive than this? What if it could become something that was regenerative, rejuvenating, life enriching and fun?

This is why having a sense of meaning and purpose behind your travelling is so important to the travelling experience. It can help and allow you to live your life to the fullest. It doesn’t just have to be something you do – it can have a positive reason. Have a think for a moment about some of the following questions:
What is it about travelling that is important to me and my life?
Who would it be important for me to spend the time travelling with? Who would I most like to meet?
Which places in the world would I most like to see, and why?
What would I like to look back on and remember doing/seeing?
If I was to step out of my comfort zone, where would I travel to?

By answering some of these questions, you can better help understand what the real purpose and meaning of travelling is for you as a person. Instead of seeing travelling as perhaps a way of trying to escape some aspect life, or alternatively trying to find something you believe is missing, consider what it would be like to enrich your life by enhancing what is already there. To fulfil life through the deliberate engagement with the experience in every place that you go to, and every activity you participate in.
Rather than having a “checklist” or “bucket list” of places you simply want to visit or sights to see, think about how it will enrich your life, why it’s important to you, and who you would like to spend the time with.
