Marrakech – located in Morocco – is a popular destination for tourists who are looking for something a little bit different in their city escape. There’s so much to explore that you’ll find yourself going back again and again, but during your first trip you’ll probably want to get an overall feel of the place so you’ll know where exactly to visit again. I visit Marrakech every year as you can get cheap flights from the UK so I’m pretty knowledgeable about the tourist attractions there. Here are my recommendations about what you should do on your first trip to the beautiful city…
Go shopping
I think shopping is an excellent way to absorb your surroundings and experience the local culture. Luckily, retail therapy is popular in Marrakech with plenty of different places for you to check out. For a truly authentic Moroccan day out, head to a souk (market) to look at the fabrics and foods that are on sale. You’ll discover gorgeous carpets and crisp kaftans, as well as oddities such as cooked snails and spices you’ve never heard of! Good items to look out for are handicrafts and leather pieces as they make excellent souvenirs.
See some modern art
For a more chilled out day, you might want to soak up some modern art instead. There is a growing commercial gallery space in Marrakech so it would be a shame to miss out on this during your visit. Dar Cherifa is the premier exhibition space in the Medina, and it’s easy to see why when you look at the building which dates back to the 16th century. It has shown work by local artists Hassan Hajjaj and Milaudi Nouiga, as well as international artists. Other places on your list should include Galarie 127, Galarie Rê, and the Matisse Art Gallery.
Eat good food
All this exploring is likely to work up your appetite so you’ll want to sit down for a good meal. With the flavour combinations and street food available in Marrakech, you won’t be disappointed. In fact, you’ll find everything from simple but delicious cheap eats near the souks to reservation-required eateries boasting award-winning chefs. Both are worth visiting so you can sample everything from local lamb stew to posh fig tiramisu. At night time, mingle with the locals at outdoor squares selling delicious food from pop-up venues.
Stay somewhere amazing
At the end of a long day, you’ll want somewhere to rest your tired legs. I always advise looking for a Marrakech riad as they are so gorgeous and very comfortable. A riad is basically a house that has an interior courtyard; a water feature at its base works as a natural air conditioning method, as well as looking very pretty. Many ancient riads have now been converted to hotels but you are still able to find some that you can rent with exclusive use. You’ll certainly feel like royalty when you treat yourself for a stay in one of these luxury establishments!

Lived in Morocco for 7 years. From my viewpoint, what you should do first is get lost in the country. Take a nice accomodation, like this hotel near essaouira and discover the charm of the country and its inhabitant:
